SANCTUARY STUDIO

Throughout her 30-year painting practice, Chati Coronel has a developed a distinct painting process she calls, Figurative Spatialism. This intricate weaving of several layers of paintings within paintings involves creating human silhouettes that serve as windows to the layers underneath. She strips these human figures of allusions to race or age or personality by showing instead, an interior life filled with abstract gestures, sacred geometry and text. In doing this, Chati points us toward the universal human and attempts to reveal deeper truths.

Chati welcomes you into Sanctuary Studio where the process of creating each painting is documented in a series of time lapse videos and video poetry created by Edber Mamisao. Let us enter Sanctuary Studio and go deep into the sacred anatomy of layers that make up Chati’s paintings.

So take a deep breath and dive in.
